KIIT Backlog & Re-Exam Rules

An F grade at KIIT is not the end of the road — but it does sit on your CGPA until you clear it. Here is how backlogs, supplementary exams and grade improvement work, and exactly how much your CGPA moves once you pass.

What counts as a backlog at KIIT?

KIIT uses a 10-point absolute grading system. Any subject where you score below the pass mark is awarded an F grade (0 grade points). That subject becomes a backlog — the credits stay on your record, but you earn zero points for them until you re-appear and pass.

A backlog can happen for two separate reasons:

• Marks shortfall — your combined internal + mid-sem + end-sem total is below the pass threshold.
• Attendance / eligibility shortfall — you were not permitted to sit the end-semester exam, which is recorded as a fail in that paper.

How the re-exam (supplementary) process works

1. Result declared — check your grade card on the KIIT Student Portal (SAP / ERP) for any F grade.
2. Wait for the exam notice — the examination section publishes a supplementary / repeat exam notification with the registration window.
3. Register online — fill the backlog exam form on the portal and select every backlog paper you want to attempt.
4. Pay the per-subject fee — the fee is charged per paper. Keep the receipt; without payment the registration is incomplete.
5. Download the admit card and check the datesheet — backlog exams often run alongside the regular exam slots.
6. Appear and pass — the new grade replaces the F and your SGPA/CGPA are recomputed.

How much does clearing a backlog raise your CGPA?

Because an F contributes 0 points but still counts its credits, the damage is proportional to the credit weight of the paper. Example semester with 20 credits:

SGPA with the F = 129 ÷ 20 = 6.45.

Now you clear Digital Systems in the re-exam with a C (6): total points become 129 + (4 × 6) = 153, so SGPA = 153 ÷ 20 = 7.65. One 4-credit backlog cleared lifts that semester by 1.20 points.

Backlogs and placements

Most campus recruiters ask for zero active backlogs at the time of the drive, and many also disallow any history of backlogs. Clearing papers in the very next supplementary window is therefore far more valuable than waiting. Company-wise CGPA cut-offs are on our KIIT placement CGPA criteria page.

Practical tips

• Never skip a supplementary window. Backlogs compound — two pending papers become four fast.
• Attack high-credit backlogs first if you can only prepare for a few.
• Fix attendance first. A paper you cannot sit is an automatic F no matter how well you prepared.
• Collect the previous year question papers from seniors — backlog papers repeat patterns heavily.
• Recalculate before you register so you know which paper gives the biggest CGPA jump.

FAQs

Does the F grade stay visible on my transcript?

Once you pass, the new grade is what carries forward into SGPA and CGPA. Some grade cards retain an attempt history, so avoid relying on the F disappearing entirely.

Can I appear for a backlog exam and a regular exam in the same semester?

Yes, that is the normal path — backlog papers are scheduled so that regular semester students can also appear.

What if I fail the re-exam too?

You register again in the next available window. The subject remains a backlog until passed, within the maximum programme duration.
